Have you ever wondered where the name Snickerdoodle came from? I did. My husband recently said he loves Snickerdoodles and I put that on my list of things to make. I found a great recipe on http://www.Food.com that had a lot of great reviews. I gave it a try and I was not disappointed. Easy to make and tastes great.
Oh, I also looked up a little history on the name Snickerdoodle if you are interested. The Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles are probably German in origin, and that the name is a corruption of the German word Schneckennudel (“snail noodles”), a kind of pastry. It is also possible that the name is simply a nonsense word with no particular meaning, originating from a New England tradition of whimsical cookie names. More recently, the Snickerdoodle cookie has transformed into a popular flavor of desserts and drinks. Big brands have taken the simple dessert and turned them into their own original products; like General Mills making a new cereal flavor, or Dunkin’ Donuts making it into a Latte, or Nestle making a coffee creamer.
Now here is the recipe:
- 1 cup butter
- 1 1⁄2cups sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 3⁄4cups flour
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄4teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 3 teaspoons cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Mix butter, 1 1/2 cups sugar and eggs thoroughly in a large bowl.
- Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl.
- Blend dry ingredients into butter mixture.
- Chill dough, and chill an ungreased cookie sheet for about 10-15 minutes in the fridge.
- Meanwhile, mix 3 tablespoons sugar, and 3 teaspoons cinnamon in a small bowl.
- Scoop 1 inch globs of dough into the sugar/ cinnamon mixture.
- Coat by gently rolling balls of dough in the sugar mixture.
- Place on chilled ungreased cookie sheet, and bake 10 minutes.
- Remove from pan immediately.
